2009 USEF Pony Finals
The recent USEF Pony Final Championships included a few Arabian-breds in several divisions. The ponies competing must qualify by winning a Champion or Reserve at an AA rated show or a Champion at an A rated show each year.
In Pony Jumpers, the purebred PARTLY CLOUDY, above, (registered as DL LIGHTNING JIM), ridden by 13 year old Mary Lauren Shelton of Texas finished in 12th individually in very stiff competition amongst 40 of the country’s best ponies. The top five competitors were in a 5-way tie before the last round. PARTLY CLOUDY won the Silver medal in Pony Jumpers at the 2007 Pony Finals.
Competing in Individual Jumpers but finishing out of the Top 12, were the Half-Arabians ROSEBELLE (registered as RAVENWOODS ROSEBELLE), RICOCHET RABBIT, above left, (registered as TOM EL BEAU JUELS) and ERIN MEADOWS SILK STOCKINGS, above right, (registered as SILK N FIRE TS).
ROSEBELLE, above, and 14 year old rider Amelia Drumm of Washington, helped the Zone 8 Jumper Team earn the Gold Medal with a no-fault scores after two difficult rounds each. The jump courses are set to 3’6” for these classes.
In the Farewell Jumper class, RICOCHET RABBIT placed 2nd and ERIN MEADOWS SILK STOCKINGS placed 11th.
In Large Pony Hunter, a Welsh/Arabian cross RIKKI TIKKI TAVI, above left, finished 30th out of 133 entries, while the purebred BEDAZZLED, above right, (registered as SAHLITAIRE DANCER) further down in the final rankings.
In the Medium Pony Hunters, a Welsh/Arabian cross SILLY PUTTY, above left, and Connemara/Arabian/Welsh pony WELLENS GOLD COIN, above right, (whose dam is a Welsh/Arabian by purebred AM LORD ELOPE). Both ponies finished in the middle third of the rankings. GOLD COIN’s dam has produced several top show ponies, as has AM LORD ELOPE.
The American Hunter Pony Classic Sale, held in conjunction with Pony Finals, featured an Arabian-bred pony in the top 5 sellers of the sale. HILLCREST’S BLUE HALO, photo left, , sired by HILLCREST’S BLUE SMOKE, a registered Half-Arabian out of LADS AMELIA (Alada Baskin), brought $42,500. There was a green Half Arabian by TF COUNT BISBEE, sire of many nationally ranked ponies and another out of an Arabian mare KHLIO BASKULE.
HILLCREST’S BLUE SMOKE, pictured below, (aka True Blue) was purchased at the 2004 Pony Classic auction for $23,500 and is also registered Half-Welsh. He was Reserve Champion in the Medium Green Hunters in 2006 Pony Finals and 3rd Overall Green Hunter Pony in 2007.
2009 ABHJA Awards
We will again be sponsoring a High Point Award for the Arabian/Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian in the Hunter/Jumper classes at SHN in 2009. Our award cooler is being sponsored by Willis & Karin Foley of Solar Hill Sport Horses. Other sponsorships are available for Trophy and Ribbons.
We are also sponsoring a High-Point Working Hunter Award at East Coast Championships on August 1st. Sponsors are Bayview Farm, Stone Hollow Sport Horses and ABHJA. Good luck!
East Coast Championships
The Arabian-Bred Hunter/Jumper Association sponsored a High-Point Working Hunter Award at East Coast Championships on August 1st. Sponsors were Bayview Farm, Stone Hollow Sport Horses, Inverted Y and ABHJA. Poinrts were tabulated from all of the Hunter Hack & Working Hunter classes.
The winner of the ABHJA High Point Hunter Award was Leah Moyer and her purebred mare CV AISLINNBEYA+. The winner received an embroidered sheet, silver trophy and neck ribbon.
The ABHJA will again be sponsoring a High Point Award for the Arabian/Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian in the Hunter/Jumper classes at SHN in 2009. Last year's winner was Michael Desiderio's TL FOOLIN AROUND.
PONY FINALS AWARDS FOR ARABIANS
Willis & Karin Foley of Belmont, NY have sponsored two cash prizes of $250 each to be given at the 2009 USEF Pony Finals. These awards will be presented to the highest ranking Arabian-bred pony in the Hunter Division and in the Jumper Division. The winning ponies must possess a documented minimum of 50% Arabian blood.
The 2009 Pony Finals will be held August 5 – 9, 2009 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. With riders ranging in age from six to seventeen, this five-day championship has young riders competing for the title of four championships—USEF Pony Hunter Finals, USEF Green Hunter Pony Finals, USEF Pony Medal and the USEF Pony Jumper Final.
“As one of the biggest and most popular USEF championships, Pony Finals consistently draws some of the best ponies in the country,” Marion Maybank, USEF’s Director of Hunter Disciplines. “The show itself is a crowning moment for all the young riders who qualified. In addition to competing in a National Championship, the kids can enjoy themselves in an atmosphere that is unlike most shows by offering fun activities for them to enjoy outside of the show ring.”
The Foleys are lifelong horsemen that breed Arabians, Welsh ponies and crossbreds at their farm Solar Hill Sport Horses. "Our goal is to promote Arabian-breds as equine athletes suitable for adults and children alike," they said. "Their contribution to today's equestrian sports is often overlooked."

REGISTRATION AMNESTY!
Registration Amnesty July 1- Dec. 31, 2009 - During the April meeting of Arabian Horse Assn. Registration Commission meeting, it was decided to hold an amnesty for the registration of both purebred Arabian and Half/Anglo-Arabians for horses 24 months and older. This amnesty begins on July 1st and runs until Dec. 31, 2009. The paper work must be started during that time to take advantage of the price reductions. For purebred Arabians, the price went from $350/375 to $250/275 for members/non-members respectively. The price for Half/Anglo-Arabians went from $115/140 to $75/$100 for members/non-members respectively. Don't miss out on the opportunity to register your older horses. Green Working Hunter at Sport Horse Nationals
The Arabian Horse Asspoc, has added Arabian Green Working Hunter and HA/AA Green Working Hunter to the slate of classes for Sport Horse Nationals, being held Sept. 22-27 at the Kentucky Horse Park. There are NO QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED for Green Working Hunter this year at SHN.
In the SHN Omnibus, there are some mistakes in Working Hunter fence heights. They should read:
ATR classes: 2’6” to 2'9", maximum spread 2'9". Minimum of 8 fences.
AAOTR classes: 2’9”, maximum spread 2’9”. Minimum of 8 fences.
Mary Lauren Shelton and the Arabian DL Lightning Jim (show name "Partly Cloudy"), were named the top Pony Jumper in the Texas Hunter/Jumper Association. The pair are also ranked #5 in the six state USEF Zone consisting of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri .
Mary Lauren is thirteen years old and trains several days a week at Texas Rose Horse Park with the pony’s owner, Kimberly Brunson. Shelton started riding horses when she was only four years old. Now nine years later her goal is to become a Grand Prix show jumper, and she is well on her way. Shelton was a Zone 7 Finalist for Children's Jumpers and competed in her first mini-prix this year against a field of adults on horses and she was the only child on a pony where she and Partly Cloudy, fondly named "Teddy", came in 6th.
Registered as DL Lightning Jim, this 1995 gelding (Baschke x Donna Gazelle) was bred by Virgil and Linda Gremore of Sapulpa, OK. Purchased as a youngster by Kimberly, she recalls, "Teddy" had some bucking issues to work through at first, but qualified for Pony Finals in Large Green Pony Hunter his first year showing.
The following year, Teddy qualified in both Hunters and Jumpers, a rare feat for ponies of any breed, but they decided to only compete in Hunters, where he earned a 13 th in the hotly contested Model class judged on conformation. The next year he competed in Jumpers and finished a very respectable 6 th place.
When the dust settled after the final jump-off at the 2007 USEF Pony Jumper Individual Championships, Partly Cloudy had placed second in a field of 40 of the top Pony Jumpers in the nation. Held annually at the Kentucky Horse Park, the USEF Pony Finals bring together the cream of the Pony Hunter and Jumper crop for a week of competition.
At the Finals, Teddy was one of only 19 ponies to go clean after the first round, ranking 12 th in time. Ridden expertly by 15 year old Tori Berlin, a student of Brunson's, the team decided to just "go for it" in one of the closest jump-offs in Finals history. Pulling a rail on their last round, they missed the Gold by just 4 faults.
In between horse shows, Teddy is a lesson favorite of Brunson's students, and so mellow they must carry a crop to keep him going. "He's the perfect pony for a kid to learn to jump on, he has the best lead changes," says Brunson, "He has a great personality and talks to us whenever he sees us."
Brunson's partner, Natalee Newton, has earned 5 National Top Ten titles with Teddy the past 3 years at Sport Horse Nationals.
AHA Rule Changes for 2009
The 2008 AHA Convention was great for Hunter/Jumper exhibitors again this year! The original Pony Hunter division is now known as "Horses 14.2 & Under Working Hunter" to accommodate those that think the word "pony" is derogatory (don't ask!). The division fence heights are not to exceed 2'6", it is open to adults and stallions are permitted.
We have managed to get Green Working Hunter added to the class list for Sport Horse Nationals in 2009, a huge undertaking! In 2011, they will also add Hunter Hack Junior Horse. The other classes under consideration are Low Jumpers and the aforementioned Pony Hunters.
Draw Reins will not be permitted in the Jumper division except in the schooling area.
The Open Show Achievement Awards Point system went through with very few restrictions - any hunter or jumper classes at a USEF/EC rated shows to count. The point table used is that shown above Art. 2109 in the AHA Handbook. Read that Article for details.
These are all effective 1/1/09.
The Right Stuff
From the day he was born, Michael Desiderio, of Chester, New Jersey, was destined for a horse show career. With Ricci and Stephanie Desiderio as parents, both of whom are accomplished horse trainers, the stage was set. Today, at the age of 18 and celebrating his last year as a junior rider, Michael has accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime.
As a competitor in Arabian breed shows, Michael has won the most National Championships of any youth in history. He has earned an unprecedented 81 National Champions and Reserve Champions, mostly in Working Hunter and Hunt Seat Equitation. Considering his first National Championship was at age 9, it is remarkable that this record was achieved in just 9 show seasons .
In 2005, at age 15, Michael was also named the AHA High Point Amateur Rider, the youngest rider in memory to be so honored.
Not only does he compete in the Arabian shows, this young man has set his sights on lofty goals in the open Hunter circuit. Just this year, at the prestigious Devon Horse Show, Michael placed first in both the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship and the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal classes.
Michael spent last winter on the Florida hunter circuit, learning training methods and other aspects of the world of show hunters. Like the other juniors away from home for the show season, he attended a special school for young equestrians and was able to maintain his good grades and stay abreast of his classes in New Jersey.
Michael’s future plans are to go to college as a Business major, and then to become a professional horseman.
He considers his start with Arabians as an advantage over other riders. “I was able to begin jumping lower height fences at Arabian shows than I could at open competitions. Also, my first horse was a little hot, so the lessons she taught continue to help me with every horse I ride,” he says.
At his last Youth Nationals, where he won 5 Champions and three Reserves, including Champion in all three Hunt Seat Equitation classes, Michael says "I just wanted to do well and end my junior career on a high note. I wanted to have some fun too!"
Undaunted by his plunge next year into the realm of Adult Amateurs, he says, "What I'll miss most about competing as a junior is not being able to ride as many different horses at the shows. There are a lot more classes for youth riders."
TL Foolin Around +// (JA Bahim Sharaab x Irish {Grade}), a Half-Arabian and 34-time National Champion in performance classes, was purchased in 2003 as a green 5-year old. "The plan was to train him and sell him, but we got along so well that we just kept him." That first year, the pair travelled from Region 15 directly to Youth Nationals and went Champion in Working Hunter, a feat they repeated all but one year after that. " There was no pressure - just fun that year as I was learning about him. He wasn't really a kid's horse, so my mom would show him in Open and I would do the Amateurs," Michael recalls. At SHN that year, Michael and his new partner were Reserve Champion in Working Hunter ATR and Champion in Hunter Hack ATR.
Michael competed for his third and final time at the 125th National Horse Show ASPCA Maclay Medal Finals. His petrfect ride was marred only by his horse pulling two rails. The video of his trip is below.
As someone who has watched this talented young man expertly negotiate hunter courses from the time he was 7 or 8 years old, and who has jogged in for ribbons behind him often enough, I must say that not only is his equestrian skill of top quality, but his sportsmanship and dedication should be a lesson to all of us.
UPDATE: Michael Desiderio has been nominated by USEF for their prestigious Junior Equestrian of the Year Award.
This award was established in 1985 to honor a junior individual who exemplifies "exceptional talent, sportsmanship and dedication to the sport" and has made "outstanding contributions to equestrian competition." A selection panel of six members, composed of representatives of the different breeds and disciplines recognized by USEF, is presented with a list of nominees.
The winner will be presented with the Ruth O’Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy at the Pegasus Dinner on January 17, 2009.
The Comeback Kid
When the Arabian Working Hunter National Champion was announced in Idaho in September, the rider’s name was a blast from the past for some spectators. Terrie Hook of Spanaway, Washington riding Classic Cori had clinched the title in her first trip back to a National show since 1999.
This life-long rider of Arabian hunters and jumpers is no stranger to the winner’s circle at the National level. Starting as a teenager, her show career with Arabians has spanned over three decades.
The story begins in 1971 with a purebred named El Khyam++, who’s owner was searching for a junior rider to compete him in jumping classes. Terrie and this amazing horse cleaned up on the open show circuit, both in the 3’6” Hunters and in the 5 foot Junior Jumpers for years. “He won so many ribbons in classes of 50+ horses, and was the only Arabian there,” remembers Terrie.
During his career, El Khyam++ broke his coffin bone which required a year-long layoff, and then suffered a stroke that paralyzed him, but after 2 years of intensive care, he came back to his winning form. In 1977 and 1978 , they earned 5 US and Canadian National Championships in both Hunters and Jumpers. The pair were so famous, that in July of 1975, El Khyam++ and Terrie were featured on the cover of Arabian Horse World.
In the early 1980’s, Terrie competed on her own purebred, Been Charmed+, to a US National Champion in Working Hunter and a Reserve Champion in Jumpers. She mostly showed this talented horse on the Open A Hunter circuit in the 4 foot and 4’9” Working Hunter divisions, dominating these classes against the very best horses of all breeds.
Later in the 1980’s, Terrie was asked to ride Dakhan Al Khanjer+, a partnership of 15 years which included US Reserve Champion Jumper and a Top Ten in Hunter. Then there was A Leader+// and Sheer Brilliance+/ in the 90’s, both winning Canadian National Championships and Reserves in Jumpers and Hunters. Purebred A Leader+// was Terrie’s mount in 1999, her last trip to Nationals, where she won a Top Ten on him in Working Hunter.
Terrie also took students to the Nationals, several of which won Championships in Equitation and Hunters under her tutelage. She branched out into eventing and dressage, earning her USDF Bronze Medal with the purebred SWA Mystic Warrior+ and USCTA Event Rider of the Year in her Region with the help of both Arabian and Thoroughbred horses. She has even claimed World Champion Jumper and Hunter titles in Appaloosa and Paint horse shows.
Her newest Arabian partner, Classic Cori, came to her four years ago for training. They have been eventing, winning Regional Champion Novice Horse and Championships at Open Circuit Hunter and Arabian shows before deciding to go to Idaho.
“We had a great time,” says Terrie. “The people at the show were super friendly and the competition was much stiffer than in the past.”
Terrie relates the story of one competitor asking her, while in the line-up of a class at Sport Horse Nationals, “Where did you come from?” She responded, “Oh, I’ve been around.” What an understatement!
High Point Hunter/Jumper of Sport Horse Nationals
The Arabian-Bred Hunter/Jumper Association (ABHJA), a nationwide group of owners and breeders of Arabian-bred horses that compete in jumping competitions, have again sponsored an Overall High Point Hunter/Jumper horse at Sport Horse National Championships in September at the Idaho Horse Park.
The winner was presented with a beautiful neck sash, gold cup trophy and embroidered dress sheet. All classes in Working Hunter, Jumper and Hunter Hack were counted toward the Championship.
This year’s winner was Michael Desiderio of Chester, NJ with his Half-Arabian gelding TL FOOLIN AROUND (JA Bahim Sharaab x Irish). The pair won National Champion in 5 classes: HA/AA Working Hunter Open & ATR; HA/AA Hunter Hack Open & ATR and The Hunter Classic.
This award was co-sponsored by Bill and Alexis Doughty of Bayview Farm in Cape Charles, Virginia.
Purebred Jumper Russian Roulett Retires
by Patti Schofler
Just about any time in his 22 years, champion jumper Russian Roulett+ must be thinking, “Ain’t life grand.” And likely he will continue as he enters a new phase, retirement. This year’s Memorial Day Classic marked the end of a five year run of championships made exceptional by his size (14.’2), his age (began competing in open and Arabian jumper classes at 17), his talent (scope and speed), his breed (purebred Arabian) and a twenty year relationship with dedicated owner, Angelique Anthony of Los Angeles.
As a competitive jumper, Sasha, as he is nicknamed, won 18 jumper championships, two reserve championships and countless class ribbons. He bested over 1,200 all breed jumpers. He was known for his consistency, he simply made it look easy. Most of his championships were gathered on the highly competitive Southern California circuit where the Arabian walked the show grounds in his Bedouin halter.
“I think at times he was a puzzlement to the open world because he was careful, fast when needed to be, and smart. He had all the elements of a scopey horse. He could negotiate a jump from any distance and mastered the traps set by the course designers to slow the horses down,” recalls Anthony.
Sidelined only once with lameness at 19, the 22 year old retires on a positive note. “There is nothing more for him to win: he won on all the circuits, changed riders three times and proving the point that a good horse is a good horse no matter who is in the irons,” says Anthony. “He has won jumping open, ATR, modified, adult and children’s amateur classes at both 1.00 meters and 1.10 meters and always had a ribbon in the Accumulator classes.
“It’s time to retire. I’ve seen open jumpers break down after years competing. I don’t want that for Sasha.”
Anthony was given the Russian/Polish cross as a two-year old (Wind Fortune, a *Bask grandson, x Muscatasha, a *Muscat daughter). This birthday gift from fellow dog show competitor, Dade Bozievich of Chopmist Arabian Farm in Potomac, Md., took to jumping early on. He had a habit of jumping out of turnouts and strolling into neighbors’ yards to snack on their gardens.
However, trail rides were his career for his first 17 years. And that is where he returns in retirement. Trainer Jorge Ludwig will see that Sasha is ridden under tack three times a week. “Jorge is very attached to his only Arabian student and plans to bring him down slowly into retirement,” says Anthony.
In the Arabian world Sasha earned his Legion of Honor. The Arabian Horse Association honored him with its Special Recognition/Ambassador Award for outstanding performance outside the Arabian show venues. Arabian wins included Regions One, Two and Seven Championships, Scottsdale Open Jumper Stakes and ATR Stakes Championship, and 2004 Sport Horse Nationals ATR and Mini Prix Top Tens. “His greatest honor was to be named to the AHA Centennial 100 list,” recalls Anthony.
Russian Roulett+ is Anthony’s first and only horse. “Sometimes I wonder how much heart it took for Sasha to travel the circuits from California to Arizona and back as a senior,” Anthony muses. “I feel lucky and thankful that my horse, as we speak, is 100 percent sound. Now my nerves can take a rest. I doubt I will ever own another horse because when all the bravado is over, it will be just me and Sasha again, two friends of 20 years, growing old together."
Greener Pastures
We regretfully announce the passing of three extraordinary Arabian bred horses this winter.
The purebred gelding Surphin Boy+//, owned by Lorraine Prowse, 8-time Canadian National Champion Jumper; 2-time Reserve Champion Jumper; 2-time Reserve Champion and 4-time Top Ten Working Hunter. Shown below competing in the Battle of the Breeds at Spruce Meadows in 2007.
The 16 year old Arabian-Trakehner gelding No Fear SHC, owned by Laurie Statam, passed away suddenly in January. Laurie and her exceptional athlete won his first National Title in 1996 with a Top Ten in First Level Dressage. From there he won one National Champion, 2 Reserves and 8 Top Tens in Working Hunter; 2 Champions and a Top Ten in Jumpers; 2 Champions and 2 Top Tens in Show Hack and 2 Reserves and 6 Top Tens in upper level dressage. He is pictured below at SHN in 2005 (left) and showing in 2007 (right).
We recieved word of the death of Anglo-Arabian DW Raven++++// from his owner Kathy Cannon Pittman. "It is with great sadness that I am reporting the death of my twice National Champion and multi Top Ten Anglo-Arab, DW Raven++++//. He passed away on March 9, 2008 at 10 years of age after a freak accident. Raymond was not only a champion, but a true friend and a trusted partner. He was a horse who would try his hardest at whatever was asked of him, always giving 100 percent. DW Raven++++// was that "one in a million" horse. How fortunate I was to have had him in my life."
Our sympathies go out to the families and friends of these wonderful horses.

High Point H/J Award
The ABHJA has sponsored a High Point Award at Sport Horse Nationals for the Arabian/Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian earning the most points in the Hunter and/or Jumper classes.
Cynthia Cubbage, owner Tracy Lord and presenter Laura Wood
The winner, Arabian gelding DA DURADO++++// (Legacy of Gold x Khimberly), is owned by Tracy Ratliff Lord and shown by Tracy and her trainer Cynthia Cubbage. They were presented with a beautiful neck sash, gold cup trophy and embroidered dress sheet.
The 1999 gelding, bred by Dolorosa Arabians, rose to the top of the heap by winning National Championships in Working Hunter ATR and AAOTR; Reserve Champion in Working Hunter Open and Hunter Hack AAOTR; and Top Tens in the Hunter Classic, and Hunter Hack Open and ATR.
The race for this award came down to the final jumping class. Runner-up was MEGAS TALL TALE, a 4 year old Half-Arabian owned by Anne Hoover.
USEF Pony Jumper Finals
When the dust settled after the final jump-off at the 2007 USEF Pony Jumper Individual Championships, the 14.1 1/2 hand Arabian gelding Partly Cloudy had placed second in a field of 40 of the top Pony Jumpers in the nation. Held annually at the Kentucky Horse Park, the USEF Pony Finals bring together the cream of the Pony Hunter and Jumper crop for a week of competition.
Registered as DL Lightning Jim, this 1995 gelding (Baschke x Donna Gazelle) was bred by Virgil and Linda Gremore of Sapulpa, OK. Purchased as a youngster by Kimberly Brunson of Texas Rose Horse Park in Tyler, TX, "Teddy" had some bucking issues to work through at first, but qualified for Pony Finals in Large Green Pony Hunter his first year showing.
At this year's Pony Finals, Teddy was one of only 19 ponies to go clean after the first round, ranking 12 th in time.
A show conflict is keeping them home in 2007, but they'll be back in '08.
In the Team competition, Half-Arabian HocusPocus helped her team win the Bronze Medal for Zone 4.
Anglo-Arabian Jumper
Tango Las Marismas, the brave palomino Anglo-Arabian gelding that carried Taylor Bland to a historic victory at the 2006 FEI Children's Jumper Finals, is proudly offered for sale by owner Las Marismas Sporthorses, a training business with bases in Canada and the Dominican Republic.
Following on her incredible success at the 2006 FEI Children's Final, Bland, under the tutelage of Canadian Show Jumping Team member Jill Henselwood, continued to lease Tango Las Marismas for the first-half of the 2007 HITS Thermal circuit in California before returning to school. Once again, Tango Las Marismas proved himself a winner in the show jumping ring, claiming the Mid-Circuit Championship in the Low Junior Jumper Division following the first three weeks of competition.
Equine Canada named Taylor, of Calgary, AB, the 2006 'Junior Equestrian of the Year'.
The Gillian Wilson Award is given annually to the 'Junior Equestrian of the Year' in recognition of a junior competitor who has made outstanding contributions to equestrian competition and who has exemplified exceptional talent, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport.
